Average Velocity Calculator

Average Velocity Calculator

Calculate v = (v + u) / 2. Choose a calculation to find average velocity (v), initial velocity (u) or final velocity (v). Enter two values and the calculator will solve for the third. You can also enter scientific notation in the format 3.45e9, with no spaces between numbers and the exponent indicator, e.

Average Velocity Equation

Average velocity (v) of an object is equal to its final velocity (v) plus initial velocity (u), divided by two. v = ( v + u ) 2

Where:

  • v(Avg)= average velocity
  • v = final velocity
  • u = initial velocity

The average velocity calculator solves for the average velocity using the same method as finding the average of any two numbers. The sum of the initial and final velocity is divided by 2 to find the average. The average velocity calculator uses the formula that shows the average velocity (v) equals the sum of the final velocity (v) and the initial velocity (u), divided by 2.

Average Velocity Problem:

During a 5k race, the velocities of runners are taken at the beginning and end of the 3rd mile. If Runner A is running at 10 mph at the start of the mile and 7.5 mph at the end of it, what is her average velocity?

In this problem the initial velocity is 10 mph and the final velocity is 7.5 mph. Using the formula, we calculate v to be equal to (10+7.5) mph/ 2 giving us 8.75 mph as Runner A’s average velocity.
